NYSHealth’s “Top 10 in 10 Years”

2016 marked our 10th anniversary year, during which we reflected on our first 10 years of grantmaking. We are proud of the work and achievements of our grantees and other partners to create change and have impact on the health and wellbeing of New Yorkers. Since we began operations in 2006, we have awarded more than $117 million to nearly 400 grantee organizations in our mission to improve the health of all New Yorkers, especially the most vulnerable. Below are our top achievements in the health care and public health fields over the past decade.

2.8 million New Yorkers
Helped 2.8 million New Yorkers obtain health insurance coverage on the NY State of Health Marketplace through policy analyses, outreach, and enrollment efforts.

600,000 New Yorkers
Ensured more than 600,000 New Yorkers receive excellent diabetes care and management.

182 convenings
Forged agreement and understanding by organizing 182 convenings with health leaders, policymakers, providers, payers, consumers, researchers, business and labor leaders, and community members.

$41 million
Developed a statewide plan to preserve and expand primary care and leveraged $41 million in federal dollars to expand community health centers.

14 million New Yorkers
Preserved community water fluoridation for 14 million New Yorkers.

$75 million
Commissioned the first-ever needs assessment of New York’s returning veterans and helped secure nearly $75 million in federal funding to support veteran families.

100 opinion pieces and commentaries
Set a health care and public health agenda by publishing more than 100 opinion pieces and commentaries.

Six communities statewide
Scored early victories in six communities statewide to improve access to affordable nutritious food and opportunities for physical activity.

Health services to nearly 6,000 refugees
Provided sustainable health services to refugees in Rochester and replicated the model in Utica and Buffalo.

$117 million
Used wise investment strategies that allowed us to make more than $117 million in grants while maintaining a stable $280 million endowment.
